6 June 1890 - The Clarence Sun

Wm. Frater, an old and honored resident of our city, passed to his eternal home last Friday, having rounded up a life of four score years. For some time he had been a sufferer from cancer and, together with age, closed his career. The funeral occurred Sunday afternoon, at the U.P. church, Rev. Truesdale officiating.

20 June 1890 - The Clarence Sun

DIED--At his residence, in Clarence, Iowa, May 30th, 1890, Dr. Wm. Frater, aged 82 years, 1 month and 21 days.

Dr. Frater was born at Lesmahago, Lenoxshire, Scotland, April 9th, 1808; was educated at Edinburg University from which he graduated in 1833; immigrated to the United States in 1836. His religious training was in the Calvinistic faith and he was a member of the United Presbyterian church from his youth. He was married in New York in 1857 to Eliza Gill, who survives him, and in 1868 they removed to Iowa, settling in Clarence, where they have resided to this time, recognized always as a worthy and highly respected family in the community. Dr. Frater was a thorough bible student and very familiar with every part of the grand old book. He read the Old Testament through 15 times and the New 28 times. In his family religious instruction was strictly inculcated. Family devotion was faithfully attended to in reading a portion of the Holy Word, expounding the same and in fervent prayer. His life passed sweetly away like the cloudless sunset at eventide. There was apparently but little physical suffering and he was conscious until near the closing hours. He was one of a family of ten children, six sons and four daughters, all of whom are gone, he being the last.
