28 March 1890 - The Clarence Sun

DIED--At his home in Clarence, Friday morning, March 21st, 1890, Mr. J. W. Neely, aged 59 years, 6 months and 1 day, of uremic poison.

The subject of the above notice was born in Adams county, Pa., Sept. 20th, 1830. He was married to Miss Laura Farrar, of New Hampshire, July 17th, 1862, came to Clarence in March, 1866, where they have since resided, united with the Presbyterian church in 1876. Mr. Neely was well and favorably known, having for the past ten years been in the store with E. B. Simmons and his successors, Messrs. Hecht & Thorn.

The circle of his friendship extended over many miles, as was shown by the large concourse of friends who attended the funeral at the Presbyterian church last Sabbath morning, the services being conducted by Rev. Downing, assisted by Rev. Manning, of the M.E. church, there being no services at that house of worship, giving all an opportunity to attend the funeral. The pulpit and casket were shrouded with beautiful flowers and blooming plants, the silent yet eloquent tribute of friends to the memory of the departed. His brothers, Stewart and Jacob, the former from Crawford county and the latter from Clinton, were present at the funeral, also Mrs. Woodburn and son, of Sterling, Ill., a sister of Mrs. Neely's.
