Funeral services for Carl Esbaum, 88. who died Jan. 19 in his home in Lowden following a short illness, were held Jan. 22 in Trinity Lutheran church, Lowden, following a prayer service in the family home. The Rev. Theo J. Eickelberg officiated. The Trinity male choir sang, accompanied by Mrs. Lorenz Hoffmeier. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery.

Pallbearers were Hugo and Everette Kruckenberg, Melvin Esbaum, Reuben Deke and Robert and Clifford Wenndt.

Mrs. Wilbur Gruenhagen, Mrs. Elmer Meyer, Mrs. George Rekemeyer and Mrs. Wilbert Wenndt had charge of flowers.

Carl Esbaum was born June 15, 1874 in Bierde, Germany, the son of William and Louise Hein Esbaum. He received his education in the schools in Germany and came to the United States in 1893 at the age of 19. He settled in the Lowden vicinity.

March 5, 1900 he was united in marriage to Caroline Moench. They farmed near Lowden and in 1917 they moved to Lowden, where Mrs. Esbaum died in 1921. In 1926 he married Emma Kruckenberg.

Mr. Esbaum was a member of Trinity Lutheran church, Lowden, where he served 12 years as an elder and also on the church cemetery committee.

Surviving him are his widow, 3 sons, Richard and Albert, Lowden and Arlin, Davenport; one step-son, Emil Kruckenberg, Elmwood Park, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by one son, 3 daughters, 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
