Elmore William Ruther, son of Christopher William and Wilhelmina Ruther, was born April 4, 1897 on the family farm south of Clarence, in Fairfield Township, and died on Thursday, December 28, 1961.

He attended Oak Hill school and farmed with his father until 1919 when his father preceded him in death.

On January 1, 1922 he was married to Selma M. Hulse and continued the farming operation until 1946 when the couple moved to Clarence and his daughter Mildred Sawyer and husband James C. Sawyer moved to the farm.

His mother preceded him in death in 1941; one brother, Walter died in infancy; a sister Viola Mensing in 1945, a brother Arnold in 1946 and a brother Fred in 1949.

He was baptized in infancy, and was confirmed in St. Johns E and R Church in 1911.

He leaves to mourn his sudden death: his wife Selma M. Ruther; two children, William R. Ruther of Burlington, Iowa and Mildred Sawyer of Clarence, Iowa; five grandchildren, Karen Meyer, James and Richard Sawyer; Virginia and Blake Ruther; two grandchildren: Michael and Diane Meyer, and one brother, Harold Ruther of Clarence.

Funeral services were held in St. Johns United Church of Christ on Saturday, December 30, 1961, followed by burial in St. Johns Cemetery. Dr. C. W. Ebert officiated at the services.

The pallbearers were Fred Bentrott, Henry Klatt, J. C. Dettmann, Wayne Merritt, Walter Hartwig and Henry Von Munester. In charge of flowers Mrs. Fred Feddersen, Mrs. Walter Hartwig and Mrs. Henry Von Muenster.
