Raymond C. West, 52, longtime member and former chief of the West Branch fire department, died suddenly late Monday afternoon, following a heart attack in his truck one mile north of Oasis.

He was born July 31, 1909, in West Branch, the son of James P. and Roberta Donaldson West.

Mr. West was self-employed as a farm-truck operator. His membership in the fire department extended over 30 years, and he had served as chief for several years.

He was a member of the West Branch Quarterback club. He also belonged to Wapsinonoc lodge No. 231, A.F. and A.M., and was a member of the Friends church.

Survivors include three brothers, Harry West, West Branch, Marvin West, Iowa City and John West, Cedar Rapids; 3 sisters, Mrs. Robert Vincent, West Branch, Mrs. Clarabelle Foster, Bakersfield, Calif., and Mrs. Idell Smith, Iowa City, and several nieces and nephews. His parents, one brother and 2 sisters preceded him in death.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) from the Friends church in West Branch, with the Rev. Clifford Wolfe officiating. Burial with Masonic rites by Wapsinonoc lodge will be held in the West Branch cemetery.
