Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Echlin were held at Red Oak Grove church April 9 with the Rev. Ernest Meyer in charge. Burial was in the Red Oak Grove cemetery beside her husband, Dr. Roy D. Echlin.

Margaret James Safley, daughter of James and Margaret Ritchis Safley, pioneer residents of Cedar county, was born in the Red Oak Grove community near Tipton, Jan. 9, 1880. She died at the Thornton Home, Newburgh, Ind., April 4, 1961. She was preceded in death by her parents, 6 brothers and sisters, Clarence, Nellie Bray, James Arthur, Effie, Archibald and Agnes; and 9 half-brothers and sisters, John, Socrates, Isabelle, Janet, Robert, Mary, Hulda McCaulley, George and Laura Hawley.

She received her education in the rural schools of Cedar County and in the Tipton high school. She received her Ph.B. degree from the University of Iowa in 1900.

She taught in the Britt high school, 1901-1902; in the Cedar Falls high school, 1902-1903, and in the Washington high school, 1903-1909.

She was married to Dr. Roy D. Echlin Sept. 15, 1909. Dr. Echlin served as pastor of Presbyterian churches in Sioux City, Rolfe, Perry, Cedar Falls and Nevada, and in Lawrenceville, N.J., while studying for his M.Th. degree at Princeton Theological Seminary. He was president of Buena Vista college from 1913-1917.

After the death of her husband, Oct. 29, 1928; Mrs. Echlin received the M.A. degree from the University of Iowa, did administrative work at Berea College, Berea, Ky., 1932-1934, and at the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, 1935-1939. She lived in Cedar Rapids from 1939 to 1953 and with her son at Norfolk, Va., 1953 to 1955. Since 1955 she had been a resident of Thornton Home, Newburgh, Ind.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Howard (Margaret) Boorman of Mill River, Mass., and a son, James Safley Echlin, of Monastery, Nova Scotia, Canada; by 5 grandchildren, Anne E. Echlin, James E. Echlin, Scott A. Boorman, Margaret E. Echlin and Deborah E. Echlin.
