Funeral services for Elwood Negus Hemmingway, 80, former Cedar county sheriff, were held Feb. 6 at the Sheets and Dahn funeral home in Tipton. The Rev. Spiedel of Low Moor was in charge. Nephews were pallbearers. Burial was in the West Branch cemetery.

Mr. Hemmingway died Feb. 2 at the DeWitt hospital following an illness of several weeks. He had suffered from asthma and underwent an operation a week before his death.

Born May 5, 1880, near Solon, he was the son of Albert N. and Ada Adams Hemmingway. He received his education in West Branch.

He was married to Clara Sophia Deburn in Eldon Nov. 2, 1904. The couple lived in the West Branch area where Mr. Hemmingway was a farmer, livestock dealer and cattle feeder. They moved to Tipton in 1942, when he first operated a dray line.

He was a member of the National Guard for many years and served with the First Iowa Provisional Regiment of Cavalry in service on the Mexican border in 1916 and 1917.

He served as deputy sheriff and sheriff for more than 18 years. He was deputy to C. H. Elwood for more than 2 years, served as special deputy for W. W. Christian and then was deputy sheriff for Charles Willey for 14 years.

Hemmingway was elected sheriff in 1956 and retired from office in 1958. He moved to Low Moor in 1959 where he lived with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Don Fuller.

He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges.

He is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Fuller; Mrs. Rupert Dunham, Dendigh, Va. and Mrs. Stan Sasiela, Manchester, Conn.; 4 grandchildren; 3 brothers, Monroe A. and H. Grant, both of West Branch and Emery, Iowa City; 2 sisters, Mrs. Linna Gleason, Solon and Mrs. Mae Davis, Milford.
