22 January 1917 - The Clinton Advertiser

Clarence, Iowa, Jan. 22--Emil Schumann, 21 years old, and employed on the farm by Gus D. Goldsmith, six miles south of Clarence, was kicked in the head by a horse on Monday morning and died before anyone discovered the accident.

Mr. Goldsmith and the young man were out doing the chores and Mr. Shumann had been directed to harness a team. This is what he was apparently doing when the animal kicked him. He had the harness on the horse but not buckled. His distance from the horse must have been just sufficient to receive the heaviest blow, for his neck was broken. His head bore marks of the hoof on one side and where he was hurled against the barn on the other side.

Mr. Goldsmith is the one who found him when he went to give him some directions as to what to do.

The body was taken to Davenport on Tuesday for burial.

Mr. Schumann was born in Davenport Dec. 24, 1895 and was raised and educated there. He made Davenport his home up to about two years ago when he started work as a farm hand for John Hartwig. He remained here until Christmas time when he went to work for Mr. Goldsmith. Surviving him are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schumann of Davenport and five brothers, Herman, Louis, August, Harold and Edmund.
