Dale R. Gruenwald, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Gruenwald of Tipton, was fatally injured abut 8 a.m. Monday when the pick-up truck he was driving to the state fair collided with a gasoline transport a mile west of Colfax on highway 6.

Gruenwald was thrown from the truck and received head injuries. He died about three hours after the accident.

Gruenwald was driving a pickup truck owned by Gerald Nevins and was taking a Duroc boar to be shown at the fair. He was following Nevins who was driving a truck also loaded with Durocs to be shown Monday.

The pickup truck caught fire and burned. Firemen were called to put out the fire before it spread to the gasoline truck, which was driven by Glen W. Benson, 45, Kellogg.

Dale Ralph Gruenwald, only son of Ralph and Kathryn Zelle Gruenwald, was born at Mercy hospital at Iowa City Dec. 19, 1939. He lived with his parents at Marengo until 1944 when the family moved to Story City. In 1946 they came to Tipton.

Dale graduated from Tipton high school this spring and planned to attend Iowa State college this fall, where he was to have enrolled as a pre-veterinary student.

During his senior year in high school he received the Iowa Farmer degree in the Future Farmers of America and was given the DeKalb Agricultural award presented annually to the outstanding agricultural student. He also won awards in swine judging.

During the summer he operated the F.F.A. sprayer, worked at the Superior Dairy three days a week and had swine, sheep and corn projects. His Landrace swine won a grand champion award at the All-Iowa fair this month.

In high school he was active in choir, swimming, dramatics, F.F.A. and was athletic manager.

He is survived by his parents and his grandfathers, Guy C. Zelle, Tipton and William H. Gruenwald, Riverside, Calif.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist church, where he had been a member of the choir. The Rev. Raymon Ferguson had charge of the services with burial in the Masonic cemetery.
