Funeral services for Robert A. Smith, 85, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Mechanicsville with the Rev. George Gallaher officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

Robert Augustus Smith was born in Cedar county, Aug. 8, 1871, the son of Charles C. and Mary Jane Smith. He died suddenly at his home in Mechanicsville Saturday afternoon.

He was married to Carrie Hines Dec. 29, 1909. She preceded him in death Sept. 16, 1956. The couple farmed southeast of Mechanicsville until 1918 when they moved to town.

With the exception of five years in business at Mitchell, S.D., and the World War II years when he was employed at the Rock Island arsenal, Smith lived in Mechanicsville.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church, a past master of Patmos Lodge, and past patron of Evangeline chapter of the Eastern Star.

Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Donald Kramer, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Buell Pieper, Mechanicsville; four grandchildren, Donna, David and Charles Kramer, and Robert Pieper; three brothers, Lawrence and Ernest, Rapid City, S.D.; Herbert, Lead, S.D., and a sister, Mrs. Dora Kahler, Hot Springs, S.D.
