Mearl Naber, 29, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Naber, died suddenly, at Stockton, Ill., where he was a member of the Stockton high school coaching staff.
Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. Friday at the Sheets & Dahn funeral home.
One of Tipton high school's greatest athletes and a letterwinner at the University of Iowa, he was named to the Iowa all-state high school team in 1946. After his graduation from high school in 1947 he attended the University of Iowa and won letters in football for 2 years, playing half-back.
He dropped out of school because of illness and operated the pool hall in Tipton from 1952 to 1955. During that time he assisted with the local baseball programs.
In 1955 he returned to the University of Iowa, graduating in 1957. He started coaching at Stockton that fall.
He was born in Tipton May 10, 1929, and spent most of his life in Tipton.
He is survived by his parents, 2 brothers, John, Cedar Rapids, and William Jr., at home, and a sister, Mrs. Jack Leverenz, of Tipton. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wendell.
