27 March 1916 - The Clinton Advertiser

Clarence, Ia. March 25 - Early Tuesday morning Mrs. Dilia Ballou, who has been critically ill at St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids, passed away after four weeks of patient suffering. An operation was performed at the time of entering the hospital and for a few days indications for recovery were very favorable, but unforeseen complications appeared and in spite of the efforts of the best medical skill obtainable, she entered into rest March 21, 1916. The remains were brought to her home in Clarence Tuesday afternoon, and the funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, with the pastor, Rev. Alexander English, in charge and her grandsons acting as the pallbearers. Interment followed at the Clarence cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Ballou resided on the farm near Clarence until about twenty-five years ago, when they moved into town, where on July 21, 1897, Mr. Ballou died. Mrs. Ballou united with the Clarence Presbyterian church in 1909, and her Christian faith was her comfort in her declining year. Her departure is a source of great sorrow, not only to the immediate family, but to a wide circle of neighbors and other friends, and to none more so than to her friend, Miss Mary Hayden, who has been her constant companion for many years.
