22 December 1955 - The Tipton Advertiser

Verne Phillips of Lisbon, well known in the Tipton community, passed away in St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids, Monday forenoon, Dec. 17, after a brief illness. Memorial services will be held at the Lisbon Federated church Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and interment will be in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, the former Gertie Jeffers, and one son Carol, of Lisbon. He was a brother-in-law of Everette Heffers of Tipton and Mrs. Claude Werling of Davenport.

Vernon Eves Phillips, the son of Lloyd and Cara Runyon Phillips, was born Sept. 17, 1886, in Columbia Co., Pa. He had been in frail health for several months and after four weeks illness, passed away in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 7:45 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, 1955.

On Feb. 17, 1909, Mr. Phillips was married to Mary Eves, who passed away on July 27, 1911. On Dec. 27, 1916, he was married to Mrs. Gertrude Dotson at Tipton where their home was established on a farm. They resided there until 1921 when they moved to their present home north of Lisbon.

Mr. and Mrs. Phillips were the parents of two sons, Paul who died at the age of 3 years, and Carroll who resides north of Lisbon.

Mr. Phillips was a member of the Lisbon Federated church which he attended regularly until his health no longer permitted. He was a good neighbor and an ambitious and home-loving person.

In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by two grandchildren, Vernon and Anna Marie Phillips; three brothers, Allen, Frank and Wilbur, all of Pennsylvania, besides many friends.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Ralph E. Schenck. Interment was in Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers were Ludwig Zinkula, Harold Locks, Alvin and Glenn Lehr of Lisbon, M. J. McCann of Marion, Leo Thimnes, Mechanicsville.
