David Flatters, an aged and well know resident of Downey, passed away at his home Wednesday morning. During the past month he had suffered from a slight attack of pneumonia but was thought to be much better until the morning of his death.

David Flatters was born in Lincolnshire, England, July 12, 1831, and died at Downey, Iowa, Dec. 16, 1908.

When 17 years of age he turned his face toward the new world, landing at New York, May 17, 1848. In 1849 he journeyed to Davenport, Iowa, and soon after located at Downey, where, with the exception of five years residence in What Cheer, he resided until his death.

When the civil war broke out he enlisted in Co. I, 5th Iowa Cavalry, serving three years and seven months.

On Dec. 25, 1856, he was married to Rachel A. Longerbeam, who died Dec. 23, 1869. To this union was born five children. On March 3, 1870, he married Lorinda J. Davis. Two children blessed this union, which lasted until his death. Besides the devoted wife, he leaves to mourn his departure three sons: Valmore R. of Downey, Arthur of Clarence, Ia., and John of South Dakota. Mr. Flatters was a kind husband, a good father and an excellent neighbor. A wide circle of friends mourn his death and sympathize with the stricken family.

Mr. Flatters was a member of the Adventist church of Iowa City.

Interment took place at the Downey cemetery Thursday, Dec. 17.
