31 December 1908 - West Branch Times

William Ewing Forsythe was born in Rockbidge Co., Virginia, Sept. 22, 1827, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O. C. Pennock, in West Branch, Dec. 24, 1908, at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 2 days.

He was married Mar. 21 to Margaret Black, and to them ten children were born, all but two of whom are still living. Three of the children were so far away as to be unable to be present at the funeral.

Death claimed the wife and mother June 3, 1876 and he was married again Oct. 25, 1877, to Mary E. Holden, who died July 3, 1893.

In the fall of 1893 he left the old home in Virginia and came to West Branch, where he has lived since then. In boyhood he united with the Seceder church at the old home in Virginia, where he maintained his membership until his death. In the home he was a kind and devoted father, and in his last years of weakness and suffering, manifested great cheerfulness and patience. At the last, feeling that he had lived out his days, he began to long for the summons from above.

Funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. O. C. Pennock, Saturday, Dec. 26, at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Montgomery, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiating. His four sons-in-law, Z. T. McCaleb, John Jack, O. C. Pennock and George Brown, and two nephews, Allen and Martin Black, acted as pall-bearers. The remains were laid to rest beside those of his son in the West Branch cemetery.
