29 November 1883 - West Branch Times

Moses Varney died on the 20th, after suffering for about one year, aged 69 years and 15 days. He was one of the old settlers of this place, thus, one by one they pass away, leaving a vacancy that is hard to fill. He was born in Vermont, in the year 1814, in 1831, when about 17 years of age he moved to the State of New York; in the year 1836 he was married to Charlotte J. Parker, who survives him. In the year 1846 he moved to Iowa, and in 1848 he settled in Cedar County where he has continued to reside, except a year or two he spent with the Indians in the Indian Territory. He has five children who are living, his two sons live in Nebraska, and the three daughters reside in this State, two of them near their widowed mother. He has been an active member of the Quaker church, and has taken quite an active part in politics and all the moral reform of the day.
