3 August 1882 - West Branch Local Record

Joseph Heppenstall, a citizen of our village, was fatally injured by the falling of a hay derrick, on the 26th inst. and died from his injuries on the morning of the 27th, aged fifty years, three months and ten days. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on the 17th day of April 1832. When about six months old, his parents removed to Salem, Ohio, where he continued to live until about twenty-one years of age, when he came to Iowa. About twenty-three years ago he was married to Margaret Smith, a daughter of Daniel Smith, and three daughters were born to them. He was a devoted husband, and a kind father; he took a very active interest in educational and political matters, and has always raised his voice against immorality and wrong of every character; he was very liberal in contributing to charitable objects; he was kind and affable and always ready to assist his neighbors when in need of help or advice. He had accumulated quite a large amount of property, but not a dollar by grinding the poor man or by defrauding those he dealt with. He was respected by all for his honesty and integrity of character.
