1 November 1883 - The Local Record

DIED CLAUD HERBERT, son of William D. and Ray W. Hammell of West Branch, died of Diphtheria, October 26th, 1883, aged 7 years 4 months and 12 days.

The brief illness and sudden death of little "Bertie" startled and saddened our whole town. At first his sickness seemed but slight, but as the disease advanced, every care that skill and affection could devise was employed, but without avail, and in the hush of nature's shadowy rest the departing spirit like the vanishing sun, peacefully disappeared, only to shine in another and brighter world. Bertie was mature beyond his years. The active scenes round his father's place of business were of his keenest observaton; and social, mental, and religous life, were subject of his thoughtful reflections. Already had he gathered some of the dew drops of divine truth, making the Savior dearer to him than any earthly friend. But now in the sinless glory with Him he waits for those whom here he loved so well. Thanks to that Gospel which opens the visions of an endless life, and bids the sorrowing friends look upward through the parting clouds, and see the children's angels near the Father's throne "until the day break and the shadows flee away."
