8 October 1908 - West Branch Times

Josiah Hoffman died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. C. Dalbey in Knights Landing, Yolo Co., California, Sept. 23, 1908. He was born near Somerset, Penn., Jan. 1st, 1835, but moved with his parents in his early youth to Iowa, settling in Honey Grove district near West Branch, where he grew to manhood and was married in 1856 to Mary J. Howard, who survives him after a married life of nearly 52 years.

He enlisted in 1862 in Co. C., 24th Iowa Volunteer infantry, served three years, participating in the operations in Mississippi and Louisana, which finally led to the siege and surrender of Vicksburg, and also in the Shenandoah campaign. Was mustered out in 1865 at Savannah, Ga., and returned to his farm in Cedar Co., where he resided till 1878, removing to California in the spring of that year and has since resided in Placer and Yolo counties in that state.

His death was the cause of a trifling wound received in the battle of Jackson, Miss., culminating in atrophy of the muscles of his arms and shoulders, causing almost unbearable suffering for the past two years.

Besides his widow he is survived by two sons, Jacob Q. of Salem, Oregon, and Charles H. of Hammonton, Cal., and two daughters, Mrs. Annie E. Cochran of Sheridan, Cal., and Mrs. Mary I. Dalbey of Grafton, Ca., besides numerous grand children scattered over the state.

He was buried at the Odd Fellows cemetery at Sheridan, Ca., Friday Sept. 25, under the auspices of Sheridan Lodge 312, I.O.O.F., of which he had been a member nearly 25 years.
