JOSEPH FREDERICK CREW DIES OF PNEUMONIA
Another West Branch Boy Succumbs to the Dreaded Disease While In Camp

This community is again in the "valley of gloom," this time caused by the death of one of our well known young men, Fred Crew, who was in training at Camp Dodge. Last Friday word was received here of his serious illness and that evening his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Crew left for Des Moines. Word was received here Monday night that he had passed away.

Joseph Frederick Crew was born Sept. 27, 1892, at West Branch, Iowa. He graduated from the West Branch High school in 1910. Up to that time his home was with his family here. In June, 1910, he went to Canada, where he farmed for six years.

Since returning to Iowa he has been on their farm northeast of town, until he entered the U.S. Service Sept. 4, 1918. He was a member of Co 48 163 Regiment Depot Brigade at Camp Dodge, Iowa. His death occurred Oct. 14, caused by pneumonia. He was in the base hospital at Camp Dodge before the end came.

His father and mother received a summons of his serious condition and spent the last three days with him, also his brother, Howard a member of the same company, who was given a permit of absence to attend the funeral.

He recognized his parents and brother, but was unable to talk much. The words, "Heavenly Father," were heard to fall from his lips in prayer by his dear ones.

The fuenral was at the family home Thursday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Laura Townsend. The interment was in the West Branch cemetery.
