Susan B. Carter was born near Mt. Gilliad, Ohio, March 17, 1844, came with her mother to Iowa and settled at Iowa City in 1856. She was united in marriage to Walter Hess April 24, 1867, and died September 8, 1904, aged 60 years, 5 months and 21 days.

Mrs. Hess had been an invalid for several years, the best medical skill had been sought to alleviate her sufferings and she had been encouraged to believe that her health was improving when she was prostrated by a stroke of apoplexy and from which she gradually failed until the final end was reached.

She leaves a husband and one son to mourn her loss. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon, the services conducted at the home by Rev. J. T. Eaker of the Baptist church. The remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing friends.
