19 September 1918 - West Branch Times

Services for the late Mrs. Mary Brown were held yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robt. Alexander of North Durango. The late Mrs. Mary Francis Brown was born in Rushville, Illinois, in 1839. She spent her girlhood days there and when about fifteen years old she moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, where she was married to Michel Birch. Of that union four children were born, three of whom survive her. Mrs. D. B. Hines of West Branch, Iowa, E. M. Birch of Aurora, Ill., and Mrs. R. L. Alexander of Durango. She was married to Mr. J. M. Brown 35 years ago last July. Mr. Brown survives her. She has lived 19 years in Jerome, Arizona. She began to fail in health two years ago after her return from California to Jerome, but with a firm will not to give up she performed her daily tasks until this last spring, she realized that she must cease her toil for a time at least.

In November, 1917, she was seriously injured in a fall from which she never recovered. Realizing that she was spared to her husband and family for a few months they submitted thier will to that of the Divine one knowing that He who clothes the lilies and roses in winter in a warm wrap of nature and watches over these frail beauties of nature until the glad spring time, will aslo care for the pain tossed spirit that has returned unto Him and to all spirits who believe that He is truly the resurrection and life and so in His hands we will leave her remembering only the friend who has faded away like a star of the morning, losing its brightness in the glowing sun, so let her rest from all care and toiling and ever remembering the life work that is done. The late Mrs. Brown passed away at Jerome, Ariz., Sept. 2, 1918.--Durango, Colo., Democrat, Sept. 12, 1918.

Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Hines of this place were in attendance at the funeral.
