26 July 1928 - West Branch Times

Elvin Reece Hawley, son of Joseph and Alice Hawley, was born at West Branch, Iowa, June 19, 1860, and passed away at his home in Sioux City, Iowa, July 7, 1928, at the age of 68 years, 18 days. He was born of Quaker parentage, and his mother was a minister of that faith for many years. She and the mother of Herbert Hoover often held meetings together.

Mr. Hawley grew to young manhood in the vicinity of West Branch, and here on March 27, 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Nora Bell. They would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary next March. Their companionship and mutual understanding have been wonderful through the years. To this union were born five children, one of whom, Miss Anna May Hawley, passed away Feb. 16, 1925. Those surviving to remember a splendid, devoted father are Mrs. C. E. Hough, Mrs. E. R. Haggard, A. N. Hawley and J. J. Hawley (one line is unreadable) eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren, who were all great favorites with "Grandpa Hawley."

The family came directly from West Branch to Sioux City, and this has been the family home for forty years. For a number of years our brother was in the service of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railway, as conductor. For about twenty-five years he has been employed by Davidson Brothers Company, the past several years in the capacity of night watchman. He was a favorite with all who knew him, and his life and conduct were such that no person could be his enemy.

Mr. Hawley was of a strong religious temperament, knew his Bible and practiced his Master's teachings. Years ago he held religious meetings at various times and places, and his faith always found an outlet in service. His Quaker spirit and magnanimity, patience and friendliness never left him; and his self-control, magnanimity, patience and friendliness bore abundant evidence of the genuineness of his practical Christianity. He was a great believer in the efficency of sincere prayer. His faith remained firm and steadfast to the end.

The loved ones have our sincere sympathy and our earnest prayers, in their sorrow, but they have a beautiful memory to cherish through the years they shall remain to follow the example of one whom they loved so much. Indeed, they sorrow, but not as those who have no hope.
