16 August 1928 - West Branch Times

A very serious accident occurred in front of the E. L. Crew residence just east of town at about nine o'clock on Saturday night. The Lloyd Lincoln family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln and their five children were walking to town from their home just one mile east of town, when they were struck by an automobile.

Winford and Donald Mather and Harold Olsen of Springdale were coming to town in a Ford coupe and met another car just as they reached this point. Blinded by the approaching car lights and the cloud of dust they failed to see the little family until they were upon them and crashed into the little group.

Lela, 5, and Lloyd, 10, were killed almost instantly. Mr. Lincoln suffered a broken right leg and was otherwise injured.

Verlene, 8, and Wilbur, 3, were also injured. Mrs. Lincoln and the babe were uninjured.

Minard Thomas, assisted by the Mather and Olsen boys, brought the injured to town. After first aid had been administered Mr. Lincoln was taken to the hospital at Iowa City. The two injured children were taken to the home of their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Terhune, in town. The little boy, Wilbur, has a broken left leg and he is terribly scratched and bruised, and his sister, Verlene, is bruised and scratched and as yet no internal injuries have developed.
