7 February 1935 - The Tipton Advertiser

Samuel Simmermaker, a highly respected pioneer citizen of Cedar county, passed away at Hershey hospital in Muscatine, Iowa, Friday, February 1st, 1935, at the age of 84 years. He had been slowly failing in health the past two years, the most of this time he made his home with his nephew Fred Simmermaker and wife, where he received the best of care.

Mr. Simmermaker was born in Crawford county, Ohio, Sept. 10, 1850, the second son of three children born to Philip and Margaret Simmermaker. The family moved to Rochester township in Cedar county the fall of 1854 and settled on a farm in the Hebron neighborhood. The trip was made with horses and required four weeks.

While a young man he united with the Hebron Reformed church and was an officer in that church for years. His father gave the land for the church and cemetery. His father passed away in 1881 and his mother in 1910. Later he transferred his membership to St. John's Reformed church of Tipton and was a faithful member all these years.

In recent years he has spent a considerable part of his time in traveling, having spent six winters in Florida and six in California aside from many other trips. He was known to help others and made friends wherever he went.

He leaves three nephews, Charles F., William and Fred Simmermaker, all of Tipton, aside from other relatives and many friends to mourn his loss.

Funeral services were held at St. Joseph's Reformed church, Tipton, Sunday afternoon with Rev. Jos. Newgard of Wilton, Iowa, officiating. Interment was in the Masonic cemetery.
