29 April 1902 - The Tipton Advertiser

Frank Edward Shultz, the third child of Daniel Shultz and his wife, Elizabeth A., was born on the old Shultz homestead near Tipton, Nov. 12, 1872 and died in Tipton, April 23, 1902, aged 29 years, 5 months and 11 days.

Most of his life was spent on his father's farm but for a number of years he was away from home engaged in different occupations. In June 1898 he enlisted in Co. F, 49th regiment Iowa Infantry Volunteers and served his country in Cuba during the conflict with Spain, being mustered out with his regiment May 13th, 1899 and received these words of commendation: "character excellent, service honest and faithful."

He was in outward appearance a person of robust health and of great powers of endurance but while an enlisted soldier, along with many others, he contracted "army fever" and was confined to his bed for thirty-nine days at Savannah and Fortress Monroe. While engaged in labor Friday, April 11, he took a cold which turned into pneumonia and finally resulted in his death.

The funeral services were held in the Reformed church Friday afternoon April 25th and the body was laid to rest in the Masonic cemetery with military honors.
