11 December 1924 - West Branch Times

Zachariah Taylor McCaleb was born in Collierstown, Rockbridge county, Va., Oct. 14, 1847. Was united in marriage with Mary N. Forsyth, Feb. 2, 1874. Having no family born to them they became foster parents of their nephew and niece, Dr. James Hill of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, and Mrs. E. Fenstemaker of West Liberty.

Together with his wife he came to Iowa about forty-five years ago, settling in Cedar county, near West Branch, and for forty-five years his life was spent in this community, with the exception of some five years spent in Oklahoma.

He united with the Presbyterian church when a young man and kept his connection with that church wherever his lot was cast until the day of his death.

For upwards of forty yeas he was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, but only a short time, Mrs. McCaleb dying in February of the present year. The loss of his wife was felt by him most acutely; it left a loneliness he never could get over.

His death took place at the home of his nephew, Dr. Hill, at Mt. Ayr, Dec. 7, 1924.

Mr. McCaleb was a quiet, affectionate and indulgent man, loving his home and his friends, and was beloved by a great many friends with whom his life was associated.

The funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fenstemaker of West Liberty, Wednesday, Dec. 10th, interment being in the cemetery at West Branch.
