30 May 1895 - West Branch Times

DIED--At his home in Downer's Grove near Chicago, May 17th, 1895, Franklin D. Millett, aged 45 years, 5 months and 16 days.

The subject of the above notice was born in Newark, Delaware Dec. 1st 1849. Leaving the east in childhood he came to Iowa where the most of his life was spent, a large portion of it in this vicinity. In early manhood he was married to a Miss Julia Beaumont, a lady of culture who with two sons and a daughter survive to mourn his loss. Mr. Millett was a man of intelligence and many good traits of character, his social qualities especially and application to pursuits in hand gaining him the esteem of all with whom he had relations. A few years since he engaged in business in Iowa City for a season and where he also joined the craft of Modern Woodmen holding an honorable membership in that body until his death. Latterly he made a home and occupation in Downers Grove a suberb of Chicago. His poor health was a long duration but the slow working of a disease (cancer of the stomach) concealed in a manner the nearness of the end so when the summons came it brought something like a shock to his friends and relatives. The remains were brought to North Liberty for burial, the funeral being held in Springdale. A large concourse of people were in attendance among them a number of Woodmen from Iowa City who acted as pall bearers for their departed comrad. May the Lord in whom he trusted give him rest, enable us all to profit by the good in his example, his sons and daughter emulate his virtues and the wife feel there is a tie drawing her more closely to the better world.

The closing of a life work is generally fraught with more importance, but there are instance as in the present when the act brings more varied considerations. Mr. Millett belonged to a family which was among the early settlers of our county, those few who helped make its history and shed a lustre on the communities where they dwelt whose brightness is yet not altogether dimmed. Coming to Iowa in the early fifties the head of the family stopped first in Muscatine county where the wife and mother soon yielding to sickness and hardships died and was buried. He then came with his eight motherless children to Cedar county settling in Iowa twp and if that portion known as North Liberty where with few changes he continued to reside until borne to his grave in the little cemetery overlooking his homestead. Here with the help of a noble and self sacrificing sister he reared his family.
