30 July 1914 - West Branch Times

George A. Smith was a native of Illinois, having been born in Kankakee of that state on October 28, 1855.

When a young man he came to Iowa and entered the university at Iowa City. He graduated from the Law Department of that institution when about the age of 24 years. He at once entered upon the practice of his profession in this state. Since that time he has practiced law in the states of Oregon and Washington.

In the year 1878, Nov. 13th, he was united in marriage to Laura G. Talcott of Brooklyn, Iowa. Two children were born to them, Harry T. Smith, who is at present residing in the state of Washington, and Mrs. G. F. Barclay of this city, at whose home he passed quietly from this life on the morning of Wednesday, July 22, at the age of 58 years, 8 months and 24 days.

For several years he had resided in Idaho and was here upon a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Barclay, when he was taken ill and the summons came for him to enter his eternal home.

The funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. G. F. Barclay on Friday morning at 9:30 o'clock, Fred L. Ryon, pastor of the Downey Street Friends church, officiating, and the remains were taken to Brooklyn, where they were laid to rest beside the wife and mother, who passed on before some 14 years ago.
