2 April 1914 - West Branch Times

Margaret Hines was born on Aug. 2, 1853, near Springdale, Iowa. She lived in and near that place until seven years ago, when she left for Texas to make her home with her daughter, Crissie.

On Jan. 2, 1880, she was married to John Swickard of Nichols, Iowa. To this union came three children, only one of whom survive her, Mrs. J. C. Mullin, of Port Arthur, Tex.

She leaves behind to mourn for her, besides her many friends, her son and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Mullin, her idolized grandchild, Margaret, and two brothers and one sister.

On the eve of March 24, 1914, she was taken very ill, and on the morning of March 26 was removed to the Mary Gates Hospital, of Port Arthur, for an operation. She passed away at 7 o'clock on the night of March 27, 1914.

Everything that medical skill and loving hands and hearts could do was done to make her last moments free from pain. In accordance with her desires, often expressed, she has been brought back to the North, she loved so well, to be laid beside her father and mother among the beautiful
hills and streams of her native state, and where, to her, the birds seemed to sing sweeter songs, and the flowers bloom more beautifully than any other spot on earth.

Her life was one of exceptional devotion to her loved ones, and her taking away leaves a terrible void to her loved ones, and an everlasting sorrow, which all time cannot heal, for those loved ones left behind. When she realized she was to be taken away, he asked the Father above to be left yet a little while longer to do for those loved ones, but He, who giveth and taketh away, sent his heavenly messengers to carry her weary, pain-tossed soul up to eternal rest and happiness. But the memory of this great devotion will remain with those to whom she was so dear until we are all gathered home to be with her for all eternity.

The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon from the Methodist church at 2:00 o'clock, Rev. W. H. Mitchell officiating. The interment was in the West Branch cemetery.

Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were: John Crotcup and Harvey Green and their wives; B. A. Kirchner, B. H. Black, Mrs. Verna Gregg, Mrs. I. O. Nash and Roy Swickard, of Nichols; John Carney and wife, of Tipton; George H. Hines, of Chicago, and Miss Edna Meyers, of West Liberty.
