Mary B. Hawley, daughter of William and Lydia Bishop was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, 3rd mo. 2, 1832, was united in marriage to James Hawley 2nd mo 23, 1851. In the 6th mo. of the following year, (1852) they moved to Iowa and settled near Honey Grove where they resided on the old homestead and raised their family of four sons. Leaving the farm, they settled near West Branch where for a number of years, they lived mostly alone, and yet not alone. Our beloved sister, although for several years one of Earth's shutins most of the time because of affliction, yet her meek and gentle Christian spirit sent out an influence like the odor of sweet scented flowers. Always patient in suffering, and hopeful under all adverse circumstance of life, she was to her bereaved husband, a true helpmate and faithful advisor and to her sons a light and councilor in the dear old home, fastening the impressions of truth and righteousness upon their hearts and lives which is now bringing forth blessed fruit for the Master. My acquaintance of nearly half a century with the deceased, under many of the changing scenes of life, my intimacy with the family; the love and sympathy which has always existed between us, enables me to say, "She hath done what she could." She was stricken with apoplexy on the 20th of 3rd mo. 1900 and remained unconscious until the afternoon of the 23rd, when she peacefully passed away in the 69th year of her age, to enjoy the home prepared for all the redeemed of earth. Her four sons were all present around the couch to comfort the stricken husband and father, and accompany the precious mother to her last resting place.
