30 July 1925 - West Branch Times

The message announcing the death of Mrs. John Lehman at Clear Lake Monday evening, came as a terrible shock to the family's many friends here.

Only a few weeks ago Mr. and Mrs. Lehman and their two sons, Irwin and Glenn, gathered up their camping equipment and started on their annual vacation trip, visiting in Minnesota and northern Iowa and enjoying the fishing and camp life. So it was as a distinct and sorrowful surprise that we learned of Mrs. Lehman's death.

The family was in camp at Clear Lake. Mrs. Lehman complained of a headache Sunday and on Monday morning became very ill. She was removed to a hospital during the day, but passed away that evening. Uremic poisoning was given as the cause of her death.

The Epworth League Institute is in session at Clear Lake and a number of West Branch friends of the family, including their pastor, Rev. Perdew, were there and did what they could for the husband and sons in their crushing bereavement. Rev. Perdew accompanied them home.

Mrs. Lehman was a woman of fine qualities. Not only in her home circle will her passing be felt but in the many organizations in which she took an active and capable part. The entire community is sincere in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.

Funeral services are being held this morning from the Methodist church, with burial at Downey.

Obituary will appear next week.

6 August 1925 - West Branch Times

Jane Lehman, daughter of Irvin and Aletha Compton, was born in Morrow, Ohio, May 19, 1874. After a brief and tragic illness which suddenly attacked her at 4 o'clock on Monday moring, July 2, she passed away the same day at 7:30 in the evening.

She came to Iowa with her parents in Nov. 1875, and settled on a farm near Downey. She attended the country school and graduated from the West Liberty high school. She also attended the Iowa City Commerical College and graduated in March, 1898. After finishing her education, she entered upon a teaching career. In this work she was quite successful. She never missed a day of school no matter what the weather and was always faithful and efficient with her work. She taught the Linn Grove, Willow Dale and Peat Vale schools.

On Feb. 13, 1901, she was united in marriage with John Lehman. To this union were born four children, one of whom passed away in infancy. The family established their home first on a farm nine miles southeast of Iowa City. Later they moved to a farm near Downey. After five years there, they purchased a place of their own near Downey and lived there for eleven years. Almost seven years ago they retired from active farming and moved to West Branch where they have had a happy and beautiful home life.

Mrs. Lehman took an active part in the social life of the community. She was a member of the Sunshine Club and the J.P.M. Club, treasurer of the American Legion Auxiliary, and the treasurer of the Methodist Sunday school. All of these organizations will miss her faithful work and her loyal support.

On October 25, 1920, she united with the Methodist Episcopal church of West Branch. She was interested in the church before, but since that time she has been a regular attendant and a tireless worker. Her faith in Christ was strong, and she tried to bring up her family in the Christian way. She was the center of the family life, and always kept things running smoothly and happily. She was a kind neighbor, a loyal friend and a good mother.

She leaves to hold her in loving rememberance her devoted husband John, her three children, Vera Mae Dexter, Irvin Francis and Glenn Allen Lehman, her granddaughter, Catherine Jane Dexter, her father Irvin Compton, her brother, John Compton, her two sisters, Ruth and May Compton, and hosts of relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Episcopal church on Thursday morning, July 30, at 10 o'clock by Rev. W. C. Perdew and Rev. L. H. Barrett. The interment was in the Downey cemetery.
