8 January 1931 - The Tipton Advertiser

Henry Shank, well known and highly respected citizen of Tipton for a number of years, passed away Monday at the home of his son Edward, at Brookings, South Dakota. With his death Cedar county has lost another of its pioneer residents. Mr. Shank was born in Holmes county, Ohio, on August 20, 1833, and was one of a family of seven children. His mother lived to the age of 102 years. When Mr. Shank was only 19 years of age he left his native state and came to Cedar county, Iowa, reaching here in October, 1852. He spent the greater part of his life in this community engaging in farming, with the exception of four years 1859 to 1863, when he was a gold miner in California. The trip was made overland by ox teams, and the return trip by way of Panama and New York.

February 8, 1855, he was united in marriage with Eliza Fraseur of Tipton, and to this union five children were born: Austin, who died in infancy; Charles of White Lake, S.D.; Mrs. C. E. Woods of Mechanicsville; Edward of Brookings, S. D.; and Mrs. John Parks, who died a few years ago. In May, 1892, Mr. and Mrs. Shank moved to Tipton.

Funeral services were held at the C. E. Woods home in Mechanicsville Wednesday afternoon with interment in Sand Ridge cemetery southeast of that city.
