27 November 1924 - West Branch Times

Josiah, son of Joshua and Elizabeth Collins, was born in Somerset county, New Jersey, March 10, 1827. He departed this life Nov. 14, 1924, at the age of 97 years, 8 months and 4 days.

When he was eight years of age he moved with his parents to Salem, Ohio. He lived there until 1851, when the family moved to Cedar county, Iowa. July 4, 1895, he with his family moved to Chillicothe, Mo., and in Dec. 1900, they moved to Parnell, Mo., where he resided until death called him to his eternal reward. March 15, 1853 he was united in marriage to Amanda Reed, who preceded him in death nearly 19 years. To this union six children were born: Jane, Emma, Thomas, Leonard and Charles, all of Parnell, Mo., and Mrs. E. Borgan, Sheridan, Mo. Besides these there remains to mourn his departure nine grandchildren and ten greatgrandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mary Hemingway, West Branch, Iowa, and a host of friends.

He braved the hardships of that early pioneer day when Iowa and Missouri were being settled, before the railroads were numerous or before the streams were bridged. His name does not appear upon our Church record, but we feel it does appear in the records in Heaven, for he was a student of the bible and his hymnal bears thumb marks deeply embedded on certain pages. The Friend Church was his choice of worship.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in Parnell at 1 o'clock p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15, by the pastor, Rev. L. F. Focht, and burial was made in the Parnell cemetery.--The Parnell, Mo., Review.
