4 March 1904 - The Tipton Advertiser

Henry P. Swartz was born in Union county, Pa., Feb. 21, 1829 and died in Ida Grove, Iowa, March 1, 1905, aged 75 years and 9 days.

He was married in Milton, Pennsylvania Oct. 7, 1851 to Miss Eliza Koch and the family came west in 1856, first settling in Clinton, Ia., where most of their children were born. In 1869 they came to Cedar county and lived for about twenty one years northeast of Tipton. His wife died Nov. 5th, 1883. In 1890 he took up his residence in Ida county and in 1892 married again. His brother's widow then living at Milton, Pa., becoming the sharer of his joys and sorrows. Their home has been in Ida county except during the winter of 1901-1902 when they spent a season with their son Mr. William Swartz of Tipton.

Mr. Swartz had been a soldier, having enlisted in Co. F., 10th Iowa National Infantry Sept. 22nd 1862 and served eight months. He was honorably discharged from the service at Washington May 16, 1863. The sickness which only terminated with his decease might be said to start with a stroke of paralysis which he received Oct. 7, 1899. From this he rallied somewhat under the best care and attention that loving friends could give him, and was able to walk around with some assistance at least part of the time until Thursday, February 18 when he was compelled to take his bed and after lingering for almost two weeks passed away at about two p.m., last Thursday.

There remain to mourn, besides his circle of old comrades and friends his wife and five children, Mrs. Ella Keith of Ida Grove, George of Minnesota, W. J. of Tipton, Arthur L. of Minnesota and Burdett N., also of Minnesota. Of these only one, W. J. was present to pay the last sad rites to a departed father.

The body was brought to Tipton, Thursday morning and funeral services held in the Reformed church at 2:30 in the afternoon, from which the remains were taken to the Masonic cemetery and laid to rest by the G.A.R. of which he was a member.
