Walter Swartzlender was born in Tipton, Iowa, March 9, 1863, and at the time of his decease, resided in Cedar Rapids. His age was 50 years, 8 months and 7 days. He was married to Lucy Foresman of Pennsylvania, at Tipton, August 5, 1885.

The children to this marriage were Reuben and Martha, who were both present to mourn the loss of an affectionate father. His wife died three years ago last March. Mr. Swartzlender had been in poor health for the past 10 years, and the loss of a loving wife seemed to hasten his end. Everything possible was done to ward off the grim messenger of death; and he bore his sufferings with great patience, fully realizing that the time of his departure was at hand. He died at St. Lukes Hospital, Sunday, November 16, 1913, at 5:30 a.m.

The remains were brought to Tipton on Monday, and after the conclusion of the services at the home of his brother, Charles Swartzlender, Tuesday, interment was made in Masonic cemetery.
