25 September 1896 - West Branch Times

Judge William Penn Wolfe died at his home in Tipton, Saturday evening Sept. 19th after a long and painful illness of a complication of diseases brought on by a bullet wound while engaged in battle with the rebels during the civil war. The funeral was held from the residence at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, and was conducted by the bar of Cedar County. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn the loss, and friends wherever he is known that will unite with us in saying a good man has left us, and no man has ever stood higher in the estimation of the people of Cedar county than the kind hearted self-sacrificing "Billey Wolf" as he was familiarly called by many of his close friends. He was one who certainly did come as near filling his allotted place in life faithfully and true, as any that can be found. As a school teacher, as a lawyer, as a soldier, as a statesman and as a Judge his duties have been performed conscienciously, and his labor all these years was for others, rather than for himself. His age was nearly 63 years.
