6 August 1868 - Tipton Advertiser

Mr. Charles Scoville, a man whose face was well known to every citizen of Tipton, died at his residence in this place last Saturday morning at three o'clock. We say his face was well known, because, after living thirteen years in a town like this, where every one is supposed to know more about his neighbor's business than his own, nothing was ever discovered by the most serious concerning his antecedents, or of his circumstances, past, present or prospective. During his residence here, he has acted as clerk in several stores, beginning with that of Tho's Harris, Sen., and ending with R. Hall's Drug Store, where he spent five years immediately preceding his death in assiduous clerkship; and when we say that for all this service he never asked or received a single cent as wages, his claim to excentricity will surely be established. He always dressed respectably; and lived in a comfortable manner with his sister as housekeeper, upon premises owned by himself. A short time before his death, these premises were deeded to this sister "In consideration of thirteen years service as housekeeper."

Of course speculation is rife, and improbable stories are told about large sums of money in the bank, (somewhere), upon the interest of which Mr. S. had lived, and which would now revert to his heirs; but nothing is known more than formerly, save that an old and most singular member of our community has left it forever. Appearing daily on the streets with almost as much regularity as the morning light, for years--he died well known, and yet a very stranger.
