28 June 1923 - West Branch Times

Late Friday afternoon William Pennington of Buchanan lost his life while bathing in the Cedar river near the mouth of Rate's run. Mr. Pennington had gone to the river in company with four of his younger brothers, and all entered the water to swim and bathe. As reported the entire party while wading suddenly stepped off into a deep hole. None were strong swimmers, but all managed to get out except William. The body was found three hours later near where he sank. The deceased was an ex-service man about 26 years of age, and is survived by his wife and parents, and 11 brothers and sisters. Acting Coroner S. F. Witmer was called to the scene and after an investigation decided that a formal inquest was not necessary.--Tipton Advertiser
