Stuart Phelps died Friday afternoon at the Mercy hospital in Iowa City after an illness of only a few days. Death came after an operation for appendicitis. Funeral was held Tuesday afternoon with burial at Sprindale.

Stuart Arthur Phelps was born December 12, 1873 in Springdale township, Cedar county, Iowa, and died May 18, 1923, in Mercy Hospital at Iowa City, after a brief illness, at the age of 59 years, 6 months and 6 days.

With the exception of ten years during boyhood when the family lived in Jones county, Iowa, his entire life was spent in Cedar county.

On December 26, 1906, he was united in marriage to May A. Leonard. To this union were born three children: Leonard A., Jean Harriet, and John William, who with his wife survive him.

He is survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. William H. Phelps, his three brothers, Gilbert R., Martin L., John D., and three sisters, Mrs. Foster Maxson, Mrs. Harvey Harold and Mrs. E. B. Brunswold.

The sudden death of Stuart Phelps comes as an unusual shock to our community. For in his demise we have lost a man who leaves behind him a host of true friends who sincerely mourn their loss. Kindests thots of his honesty and uprightness and of his unselfish devotion to the interest of the community are expressed by all.

A devoted husband and a loving father, he spared no efforts to make his home a happy one.

In the going of our friend we can only be reconciled to our loss by the assurance that our Father knows best. And shall not the memory of his sunny disposition and unfailing kindness inspire us to higher and nobler lives?

The funeral services were held at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, May 22, at the Springdale Friends church, Rev. A. L. Knight, assisted by Rev. W. G. Rowley, conducted the services.
