Mary R. Pearson, wife of John Pearson and daughter of Caleb and Phebe Ray Miller, was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, April 20, 1821 and died February 4, 1913, at her home in Springdale, Iowa, aged 91 years, 9 months and 14 days.

Her mother died when she was nine and her father when she was 13 years of age. Her education was acquired under many difficulties, but she persevered and taught school a number of years until her marriage to John Pearson at Raysville, Indiana, April 23, 1847. They were married by Friends ceremony, and their first acquaintance was formed when John attended her school as a pupil. They lived on a farm in Ohio ten years; since 1857 they have lived on a farm near by, and later in the village of Springdale.

Fourteen years ago she fell and dislocated her hip and since that time she has been unable to walk without the aid of crutches, but bore her constant suffering with Christian cheerfulness and fortitude.

She was a birthright member of the Friends church of which she was an active and faithful worker and an elder for many years. Her loving heart drew many friends about her, and she also carried on an extensive correspondence until near the time of her death.

Five children were born to them, Louisa Jane died in 1894, aged 44 years; Elvira in 1892, aged 38 years; Linneus in 1858, aged 2 years; Horace C. in 1910, aged 50 years. Left to mourn her loss are her husband; their second child, Albannus, with his children, Ethel E., Clara L. and John Francis; also Edith and Earl, children of Horace.

The funeral services were held in the Friends church and were conducted by her pastor, Rev. E. L. Gregory. Her body was borne to its resting place by Chas. R. Mountain and Fred W. Hinkhouse, husbands of Ethel and Clara, and four great nephews, sons of Lycurgus and Lucy Pearson, viz: Henry B., Charles W., Alva H. and Frank L.

The directors of the West Branch State Bank, of which institution John Pearson is president, attended in a body.
