18 December 1924 - West Branch Times

Mary J. Lanning was born in Iowa City, Iowa, February 10, 1849, in which vicinity she grew to womanhood. On November 30, 1871, she was united in marriage to Chas. H. Fairall. To this union were born eight children, Mary, Truman, Mattie, Clara, Charles, Florence, Blanch and Delbert.

At the time of marriage Mr. and Mrs. Fairall established their home on the farm three miles west of West Branch, where all their children were born and where the family lived for nearly forty years. In 1908 they moved from the farm to the present home in West Branch. Before they had got entirely settled here Mr. Fairall's death occurred Nov. 29th, 1908. Two of the children, Mary and Mattie, have also preceded her in death.

The deceased was baptized and became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in Iowa City, when but a girl thirteen years of age. Later in life she was affiliated with the Presbyterian church in West Branch, and for a number of years she has attended the Friends church of this place, having been a member and a worker in the Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Fairall was a faithful companion in the home, sharing generously with her husband in the responsibilities of home building. She was a kind and loving mother, of even temper and cheerful in disposition. Her busy life was ever characterized by unselfish and untiring devotion to the happiness and welfare of her own family, as also to the highest and best interest of the community. Her whole life gave evidence of her personal acquaintance with the spirit and teachings of the Master whom she served for so many years.

Following a brief illness of but a few days, she passed away in her home at West Branch, Iowa, on December 13, 1924, aged 75 years, 10 months and 3 days.

She leaves to mourn her loss six children: Truman of Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. Clara Wood of Des Moines, Iowa; Charles M. of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Florence Moore of Oasis, Iowa; Mrs. Blanch Vore of Des Moines, Iowa; and Delbert of West Branch, Iowa, besides nine grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. All the children, except Truman, were here for the funeral.

Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. H. Wilson and Rev. L. H. Barrett, with burial in the cemetery on the hill.
