12 April 1923 - West Branch Times

Ella Elizabeth Jenkins was born April 7, 1860, at West Bend, Wis., and died April 4, 1923, at Centerdale, Ia. Her mother died when she was four years old. At the time of her father's death nine years later, the home was broken up and she was brought by an older half brother to Centerdale, Iowa, where he was then living.

Her young life was at once grafted into a community that has been her environment to the day of her death. School with its assocations, made her at once one of a coterie of active and happy little human beings, developing into manhood and womanhood. When she had reached the end of her school days, in her 18th year, she was happily married to Geroge S. Pownall and began the home life on a farm. Two children were born to them, Walter, who died on the verge of manhood, and Ila T., who, with his wife is now living in Iowa City.

Her two sisters, Belle, who was with her during her last sickness, and Jennie, who lives in Pasadena, California, survive her.

Ella was a part of the life of the community, and her part, as we look back, was performed with a perfectly unselfish attitude. Her influence made only friends, and her fine efficiency made her the ever ready and useful helper wherever there was need.

As a wife, mother, sister, friend, she has acted her part faithfully and well. Life was full of interest and very dear to her, and yet when the time came when she must give it up, death very evidently meant no terror, and her resignation was perfect.

Funeral services were held at the residence Saturday morning, on the anniversary of her birthday, sermon was by Rev. Tennant of the Methodist church, West Liberty, interment in the Friends cemetery near West Liberty.
