11 January 1923 - West Branch Times

Thomas Petersen was born Oct. 1, 1828, in the hamlet of Estrup, Horby Sagn, Jutland, Denmark. He was joined in marriage to Miss Hannah Christensen on the 30th day of March, 1848. To this union was born seven children--Anton Petersen, died July 27, 1910; Mrs. Muren Swendsen, West Branch; Peter Petersen, Kirubra, Minn.; Mrs. Anna Marie Christensen, dead; Jens Petersen, West Branch; Christian Petersen, Rose Creek, Minn.

The aged couple, Thomas Petersen and wife, came to this country in Feb. 1898, in company with his son Anton and his wife Marie, who had been on a visit back to Denmark.

They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary March 30, 1908, and diamond anniversary 1918.

For about thirteen years they made their home with Anton, their son, and after his death they dwelt for three years in West Branch with his widow Marie Petersen. For nine years they have had their home with their son, Jens Petersen, and wife northeast of town. Here Thomas passed away in the early morning of Jan 4th last, peacefully and without struggle at the age of 94 years, 3 months and 3 days.

He leaves his wife, not only to mourn his loss, but to thank and praise the Lord for the grace bestowed upon her husband to leave this life in a living faith our Christ. Besides his wife left behind him, there are five children and twenty-seven grandchildren and many friends in and out of town that will join in the name of the Lord for the living faith revealed in Thomas Petersen's life and death.

The deceased was a child of the Lutheran church in Denmark; baptized as an infant and taught the Christian religion and was also confirmed, but not until the year of 1896 did the word of God take root in his heart, and both he and his wife were converted about the same time, and in this state of peaceful mind they have, by the grace of the Lord, been sustained into their advanced age. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints." Psl. 116.15.

The funeral was conducted by Rev. H. P. Jensen from the Jens Petersen home at 1 p.m. Jan. 6th. Interment was made at West Branch cemetery.

Out of town people attending were Christian Petersen of Rose Creek, Minn., and Mrs. P. Petersen of Kirubra, Minn.
