8 November 1923 - West Branch Times

America Chisman was born at Lawrenceburg, Ind., on March 18, 1854. She was one of a family of twelve, her twin sister, Liberty, having passed away before her. In early childhood she moved with her parents to Linn county, Iowa, but she has spent most of the latter part of her life in Cedar county.

She was married on Sept. 13, 1872, to John G. Sailor. To them were born three children, William, Fred and Ruth, the first of whom passed away Dec. 9, 1902. Besides her husband, son and daughter, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, four sisters and one brother mourn her departure: Mrs. T. S. Wand, Cedar Rapids, Ia.; Mrs. W. C. Jack, West Liberty, Ia.; Mrs. Electa Lewis, Maquoketa, Ia.; Mrs. Enos Vaugn, Preston, Kan., and William Chisman, Marion, Ia.

After a brief illness in an Iowa City hospital she passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 1923. Funeral services were held at Cedar Bluff, Ia., on Thursday at 2 o'clock, with Rev. Dr. Sylvester Ellis of Mt. Vernon in charge of the services. Burial was made in Evergreen cemetery west of Cedar Bluff.

Her family and her friends have in her an example of a true Christian whose loving hands never tired of doing for others. Her life was characterized by its purity and devotion to duty. Throughout her recent illness she showed that same beautiful spirit and bravery which characterized her entire life.
