26 June 1924 - West Branch Times

Lindley Hoag Embree was born in Morgan county, Ohio, on November 11, 1835. His father was Israel Embree and his mother Mary Ann Embree. In the family of which he was a member there were eleven children. Of these all but two brothers have passed away, and they were unable to be present because of sickness or age.

Mr. Embree received his early education in Morgan county. He was a high school graduate and had attended several terms at college.

He was united in marriage with Nancy Parker. To this union was born one child, Mrs Nancy Rowley, of Cleveland, Ohio. The young wife lived only a little over a year after their marriage. Shortly after her death Mr. Embree moved to Kinmundy, Illinois, where he taught school for several years. Here he met Susan L. Gibbs, to whom he was united in marriage on March 26, 1869. To this union were born five children, Maggie, Kate, Jeptha, Lillian and Minnie.

In the early seventies, the family moved to West Branch where Mr. Embree opened a grocery store. Later he farmed about six miles north of West Branch. After a number of years he moved to Springdale, where he conducted a general store. About eight years ago he retired, and since that time has made his home with his daughter and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Wilson of this place.

His faithful wife passed away over four years ago, on January 29, 1920. Three of his children have preceded him in death, Mrs. Maggie A. Jackson, Mrs. Lillian Timmerman and Jeptha Embree.

Religion had a place in his life. He loved the Lord and His church. When he was discouraged he often found comfort in having a hymn read or sung to him. He was raised a Wilbur Friend, but united with the Methodist Episcopal church shortly after coming to West Branch.

About four years ago, Mr. Embree had a stroke which rendered him bedfast for over four months and seriously impaired his speech. Since June 3rd, he has been unable to leave his bed, and early in the morning of Saturday, June 21st, he peacefully passed away to his Eternal home.

He leaves to recall the many pleasant associations of a life well spent his three daughters, Mrs. Nancy Rowley of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. Kate Irene Wilson and Mrs. Minnie Browning of West Branch and four grandchildren, Mrs. Maude Jackson Cromer of Kansas City, Arthur Jackson of Muscatine, Floyd Jackson of Iowa City and Suzetta Browning of West Branch.

When the night fell, he was here amidst the cares and infirmities of life; when the morning dawned, he was with God at rest.

The funeral service, conducted by Mr. Embree's pastor, Rev. W. C. Perdew, was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Wilson on Sunday afternoon at four o'clock. The burial was in the West Branch cemetery.
