19 January 1922 - West Branch Times

Susanna Gates was born in Circleville, Pickaway county, Ohio, October 23, 1833, and died at the home of her daughter, Sarah Jane Jenkinsen, Downey, Iowa January 14, 1922. Age 88 years, 2 months and 22 days.

In 1836 she moved with her parents to Rose Hill, Darke county, Ohio where she was educated, religion and culture surrounding her into a gracious womanhood. Whatever was best in the life of her home town she was a part of--its society, her Sunday school and church.

She was united in marriage to John Gates of Chillicothe, Ross county, O., April 9, 1852. To this union eight children were born. All save two survive the departed mother, Elizabeth and Nora May. They are Sarah Jane Jenkinsen of Downey, Leonard W. Gates of Anthony, Kansas, Harvey W. Gates of Moran, Kansas, Mrs. Katherine A. Hormel of West Liberty, Mrs. A. W. Lodge of Haswell, Colorado and George E. Gates of Downey, Iowa.

Grandma Gates was converted to Christ very early in life and united with the Evangelical church during her period of life in Ohio. In 1873 the family moved to Iowa settling on a farm east of Downey, now known as the Gates farm. Here she made her home with her dear husband till a dark cloud gathered over the home, when father and beloved husband passed into the great beyond, January 18, 1883, the management of the home and the care of the family falling on the mother whose heroic devotion was equal to every need.

She has been a member of the Methodist Protestant church for 35 years, joining this fellowship by church letter February 6th, 1887. She was always devoted to her church, in all kinds of weather with her family they would make their way to divine service. Her place was filled and it is said that only on rare occasions did she miss service.

Now she has gone to the Paradise of God to await the coming of her loved ones. After all, it is a complete life full of the best that can come to any woman, as wife and mother.

She leaves to mourn her loss, her beloved daughter, Sarah Jane Jenkinsen of Downey, Iowa; Leonard W. Gates of Anthony, Kansas; Harvey of Moran, Kans.; Mrs. Katherine A. Hormel of West Liberty, Iowa; Mrs. A. W. Lodge of Haswell, Colo.; George E. Gates of Downey, Iowa; one half sister Mrs. Rebecah Young of Rossberg, O.; and John Figle, half brother of Downey, Iowa; with these are many grandchildren, greatgrandchildren and a vast number of sorrowing friends.

The funeral services were held at the Downey Methodist Protestant church by the Rev. J. Clare D.D., and was ably assisted by the Rev. J. S. Wood of Marne, Iowa, who paid a fine tribute to Grandma Gates, having been her pastor for seven years.

The remains were laid to rest in the Downey cemetery by that of her husband to await the coming of the King. Rest, sweetly rest.
