5 December 1878 - West Branch Local Record

DIED--At the Iowa River Mills, Iowa City, on Tuesday, Dec. 3d, JESSE JACKSON, of Gower township, this county. Verdict of Coroner's jury--heart disease.

Mr. Jackson had left home on the fatal morning enjoying his usual health. While in the act of unloading his grain at the mill, he suddenly fell prostrate in his wagon, groaned a few times and expired. He was entirely alone among strangers, who brought his remains to where they were held for identification, subsequently passing into the hands of the Coroner, who empaneled a jury, held an inquest, and returned a verdict as above.

He had been troubled with an affliction supposed to be located near the heart for some time, and consequently his demise was not unexpected.

He was a good citizen, a kind husband and father, but he had run his race, he has finished his course, and we would not call him back, for we believe he is where sickness, sorrow or pain can never enter. He was in the 69th year of his age. Funeral services today (Thursday) at the Honey Grove meeting house, at 11 o'clock.
