11 August 1921 - West Branch Times

Herbert H. Longerbeam, son of Frank and Mary Longerbeam, was born at Downey, Iowa, on the 26th day of September, 1889, and died on the 31st day of October, 1918, his age being 29 years, 1 month and 5 days. He leaves to mourn him his mother, Mrs. Mary Longerbeam; three sisters, Mrs. Frank Hess, Mrs. George Sizer and Miss Eva Longerbeam; two brothers, Charles and Koert; the father having preceded him in death.

Herbert answered his country's call and entered the service on May 13, 1918, and was sent to Camp McArthur, at Waco, Texas, to receive his training. He was there assigned to Co. B, 64th Infantry, 7th Division. A short time later, on August 13th, he sailed on the Manchuria, but owing to certain conditions the ship returned to New York harbor, being out only a few days. He later sailed on the … on August 26th, arriving at Brest, France, on September 23rd. His company almost immediately went into action near Thiaucourt, France, where eight days later, October 16th, he was seriously wounded by shrapnel, was taken to Evacuation Hospital No. 1 near Toul, France, where he died on October 31, 1918.

Herbert was the only one from this immediate community to make the supreme sacrifice for his country during the late war. He was highly respected by all who knew him and in his passing beyond, the community lost one of its best young men and the nation a true soldier.
