Wm. Wertz was born in Knox county, Ohio, on Dec. 16, 1839. He moved to Iowa when 7 years of age and was a residence of Scott county until 1878 when he moved to Cedar County near West Branch. In 1896 he moved to Emmett county where he resided until his death. He is survived by his wife and five children, Roy Wertz of Waterloo; Mrs. Edwin Lee of Iowa City; Mrs. S. J. Schley of Weyburn, Canada; Frank Wertz of Dolliver, Ia.; and Vernon Wertz of Iowa City. He is also survived by five sisters: Mrs. W. G. Cunningham, Blair, Neb.; Mrs. B. F. Baughman of Rock Island, Ill.; Mrs. L. Davidson of Springdale, Iowa; and Mrs. C. D. Williams, Chicago, Ill.

His death occurred at 1:00 o'clock, Saturday morning. He came to Iowa City, Oct. 11, for treatment for stomach trouble, with which he had been afflicted for a long time, but received no relief. Funeral services were held at Iowa City on Sunday at 3 o'clock.
